Dear NYS Department of Environmental Conservation,
I am writing to provide feedback on the proposed deer regulation changes.I support the goal of increasing antlerless deer harvest and agree with the proposed changes that create more opportunity and incentive for hunters to harvest does, including the concept of earning a second buck tag. However, I have concerns about allowing hunters to harvest two bucks within a single season. I believe this could have negative impacts on buck age structure and overall herd balance, particularly during high-pressure portions of the season. As an alternative, I would support maintaining the current framework of one buck per implement, such as:
- One buck with a bow
- One buck during the regular firearm season
- Or two bucks with a muzzleloader if other tags are unfilled
This structure could still incorporate an “earn-a-buck” requirement to unlock a second buck, while preventing excessive harvest pressure within any single season.I appreciate the opportunity to provide input and support DEC’s efforts to responsibly manage New York’s deer population.Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
