The First Buck on My New Farm

The First Buck on My New Farm
Big Buck Down: My First Rifle Hunt on the New Farm
This past fall was one for the books. After years of dreaming, saving, and grinding, my wife and I closed on our first house, and it just happened to include a piece of hunting land in New York. I never thought I’d own my own farm this early in life, but hard work paid off. And as luck would have it, my very first season deer hunting this property ended with an unforgettable rifle hunt and one of the best bucks I’ve ever taken.

The Dream of Land Ownership
Owning hunting property has been a goal of mine since I was a kid. The chance to scout, manage, and hunt on land I can improve year after year has always been the ultimate dream. We closed on the farm late in the New York deer hunting season, leaving little time to scout properly or make big improvements. Still, I wasted no time placing trail cameras and walking the property to get a feel for deer movement.
Almost immediately, I found signs of a couple of solid bucks, including one rumored by locals to be a seven- or eight-year-old bruiser who had survived countless seasons. My excitement for the New York rifle season was sky-high, but I knew the learning curve would be steep.

The Hunt That Made It Happen
November 24th. My third sit on the new farm. The conditions felt right cool air, steady wind, and the kind of quiet morning where you just know deer will be on the move.
As daylight broke, I scanned the woods carefully, soaking in the moment. Then it happened. A flash of white antlers cutting through the brush just 30 yards away. My heart immediately went into overdrive.
I eased my Mossberg Patriot 6.5 PRC into position, took a steady breath, and squeezed the trigger. The shot hit home, and the buck crashed only a short distance away. Walking up to him, I realized just how special this moment was. Not only was this one of the nicest bucks I’ve ever taken, but it was also the first deer I’ve harvested on my own farm, and my first rifle hunt.

Gear That Got It Done

Rifle: Mossberg Patriot 6.5 PRC
  • Known for its accuracy and reliable performance, the 6.5 PRC cartridge provides excellent flat trajectory and downrange energy, making it a great choice for whitetail hunting in New York and beyond.
Optics: A clear, low-light capable scope.
  • Early morning visibility was key to making a quick shot when the buck appeared.
Stealth Cameras:
  • Placing cameras on deer travel corridors helped confirm movement patterns and gave insight into which bucks were frequenting the area.
Lessons for Hunting New Property
This hunt taught me valuable lessons that apply to any hunter stepping onto fresh ground—whether you’ve just purchased land or gained access to a new lease.
  1. Start with Natural Movement
Deer follow predictable patterns during the rut. Focus on known travel corridors, bedding edges, and food sources before committing to permanent stand locations.
  2. Use Trail Cameras Strategically
Trail cameras provide vital intel without over-pressuring deer. Position them in funnels, on scrapes, and along edges to see where bucks are moving in daylight.
  3. Minimize Human Pressure
New ground means deer aren’t used to your presence—keep it that way. Hunt sparingly, and avoid over-walking the property to prevent educating deer early.
  4. Capitalize on Prime Conditions
Cold mornings, the right wind, and low hunting pressure create opportunities. When the forecast looks perfect—go.
  5. Stay Ready for Split-Second Encounters
Bucks can appear out of nowhere. Keep your rifle steady, your movements controlled, and your focus sharp.
Why the Mossberg Patriot 6.5 PRC Shined
For hunters researching rifle options, the Mossberg Patriot in 6.5 PRC stands out. The cartridge offers superior ballistics, maintaining energy and accuracy for medium-to-long-range shots. Combined with a smooth action and solid ergonomics, it’s a reliable choice for whitetail hunters across the country.

Looking Ahead
This hunt represents more than just a successful harvest, it marks the start of a new chapter in my deer hunting journey. Over time, I’ll be adding food plots, improving habitat, and dialing in stand setups to make this property even better.
But no matter how many bucks I take here, I’ll never forget the first one, the rifle hunt that made my dream of hunting my own land a reality.
